Avoid These Positions To Relieve Back Pain, Hip Pain, & Piriformis Syndrome

Quite often, Back Pain, Hip Pain & Piriformis Syndrome is caused by excessive compression or strain on the tissue in or about the back/hip. This includes things like the joints in the lower back, sciatic nerve, deep hip muscles (including the piriformis), hip joint, labrum, and the glute tendons. The result is often pain, numbness, or tingling in the buttock, groin, hip, or leg.

In actuality, most of time, stretching things just makes these problems worse! (watch the video below to learn more)

Stretching tissue or compressing it- increases strain and lengthens tissue very temporarily, causing less blood supply and oxygen to get to the tissue. What most people don't realize is that there are likely positions throughout the day that are making these issues worse (or keeping them from healing). Positions that have become habits... Like- crossing your legs, standing with weight shifted onto one leg, or sleeping with the hip in a funky position (falling across body). These positions place strain and compression on tissues around the hip and can often continue to "spark" the fire or knick the scab.

Without correcting these positions, exercises may help, but often- the pain will return. To create a more optimal healing environment for problems like piriformis syndrome, sciatic nerve pain, hip bursitis/arthritis, hip impingement, back problems, or gluteal tendinopathy- be sure to correct day-2-day habits (seen in video above) to create the most optimal healing environment.

What Hip Arthritis Feels Like- Royersford, PA Physical Therapy

I’ve seen it many times… buttock pain and leg pain treated as if it were a problem in the back… when actually it was a problem in the hip.. ALL ALONG. Hip arthritis is a problem that occurs within the hip joint- causing gradual hip stiffness, pain with sitting or at night, pain with walking or going up the stairs, and groin pain, buttock pain, OR sometimes knee and shin pain.

In a past video post- I discuss some of the telltale signs of hip arthritis… Watch it by clicking below.

.Weakness in the hip muscles can create the hip muscles to become overworked… these hip muscles can send pain down the outside of the leg, into the shin, and even as far as the outer ankle bone. These muscles in the hip have been known to create a “pseudo” OR fake sciatica like pain… that even some of the best PTs and surgeons THINK is really coming from the back…

I treated one lady recently- who went all over town for her chronic buttock pain…  she tried chiropractic care, physical therapy, had injections to her back, and was even recommended SURGERY- on her back! …  BUT when we saw her- it was clear that the problem was actually coming from her hip.

Here’s what she had to say…

“For over a year I have been unable to walk more than 200 ft without having to stop and stretch to relieve the pain in my hip. I had been unsuccessfully treated for 4 months last year for trochanteric bursitis and osteoarthritis by my primary care doctor, an orthopedic surgeon, and many PTs. I decided to visit Charlie as a final attempt this summmer to find out what was causing my pain and correct the problem.
At my evaluation, Charlie had me walk until I felt the pain. While watching me walk, he noticed that I had gait issues. He prescribed an exercise program and 6 treatment sessions. Happily, by the 5th session, I was dancing at my daughter’s wedding and am now hiking every day with our puppy.”  Thomasina

Pretty crazy that this was missed all along…

But, if you know the signs to look out for- then it can be easy to tell the difference between a problem coming from the back and/or from hip arthritis.

Hip pain and arthritis can cause groin pain, buttock pain, outer hip pain, and even knee or shin pain. If you’re having trouble crossing your legs- or sitting indian style… then you might benefit from hip treatment to make you move and feel better…

Just the other day, a women came to me with buttock, knee, and shin pain- after she had been told it was coming from her lower back… she even had injections to her lower back- with NO RELIEF.

After listening to her story, and looking at how she moved, It was clear that all of her symptoms were caused by a problem in her hip- NOT her back… in fact, she had no back pain… had someone taken the time to listen- it was clear that she had no back problem.

When I asked- what do you feel is causing your problem- she said, “My Hip!”

Sad, but true…

Anyways, there are several common signs of hip arthritis… click the video to learn the 4 Telltale Signs…

Hip arthritis often sounds and feels like a problem coming from the back— you might even have a problem in the back and the hip!

But, if you’ve been treated for your back pain and nothing is working- consider that perhaps you have no problem in your back…

If you’re 50 years of age or older, and feel buttock, groin, or outer hip pain… even knee pain or shin pain- be aware that your hip could be the problem.

The hip can refer or send pain to all of these areas… many mistake a problem in the hip as a problem in the back… or even sciatica.

It can be easy to miss…

There are even stories of people who have knee replacements (get new knees) and afterwards feel no relief.  But when they later get treatment for their hip- or even a hip replacement- all their knee pain is gone…

Hip pain treatment is aimed at improving motion in the hip and then getting you stronger, so you can move better and get back to normal.  Many times a hip surgery/replacement is not needed. Physical therapy and specialized hip treatment can completely relieve your pain… cool stuff.
